Recipe Portion Calculator

How do you calculate calories in homemade food?
Divide the calories in the finished recipe by its total weight, then multiply by the weight of your portion. This estimates your portion's share of the recipe, assuming the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Portion calories = total recipe calories × portion weight ÷ finished batch weight
Worked example: one bowl from a batch
A recipe with an estimated 2,400 kcal weighs 1,800 g after cooking. A 300 g bowl is one-sixth of the batch: 2,400 × 300 ÷ 1,800 = 400 kcal. The same batch contains about 133.3 kcal per 100 g. These are illustrative values, not nutrition data for a particular dish.
Getting useful inputs
- Sum calories for the quantities of ingredients actually used. Include added oils, toppings, and sauces that remain in the finished dish.
- Use label serving sizes to scale ingredient calories. A label may describe one serving rather than the whole package. FDA guide to reading Nutrition Facts labels.
- Weigh the finished food and subtract the empty container's weight. Use grams for both the batch and your portion.
- If ingredients or cooking liquid are discarded, the original ingredient total may not represent the finished dish. This tool cannot estimate those losses.
Common questions
Does this calculate a recipe from its ingredients?
This version starts with a total you supply. It does not look up foods or calculate ingredient nutrition. It turns your recipe total into a portion estimate.
What if my serving has more meat or sauce than the rest?
The weight-based split assumes an even mixture. For uneven dishes, calculating the components separately can better represent what is on your plate.
Can I divide the batch into equal servings?
Yes. Divide the finished batch weight by the number of equal portions you want, then enter that portion weight. The result describes the portion you chose; it does not choose a serving size for you.
