Protein Cost Calculator
Compare food prices by cost per gram and per 25 g of protein using your package prices and nutrition labels. Free, no signup.
How do you compare the cost of protein?
Divide a package's price by the total grams of protein it contains. Multiply that result by 25 to compare foods on the same protein amount, even when their package sizes differ.
Total protein = servings per package × protein per serving
Cost per 25 g protein = package price ÷ total protein × 25
Worked example: two packages
Package A costs $6 and has 5 servings with 20 g protein each: 100 g protein in total, or $1.50 per 25 g protein. Package B costs $4 and has 4 servings with 10 g each: 40 g total, or $2.50 per 25 g protein. Package A costs more at checkout but less for the same protein amount. These are fictional prices and label values.
Where to find the numbers
Use the package price you would actually pay, servings per container, and protein grams per serving. The FDA explains how to read these serving and nutrient amounts in its Nutrition Facts label guide. Protein grams are not the same as the weight of the food.
If the label gives protein per 100 g, divide the package's matching edible weight by 100 to get the number of 100 g servings. For example, a 450 g package has 4.5 such servings. Keep the weight and protein values on the same preparation basis.
Common questions
Does the lowest price mean the best food?
This tool compares cost for a fixed protein amount. It does not score protein quality, calories, other nutrients, taste, allergies, food waste, or preparation costs. Those can all matter to your choice.
Is 25 g a recommended serving?
No. It is a shared comparison unit, like comparing price per kilogram. The tool does not calculate how much protein you should eat.
Are these live grocery prices?
You provide the prices, so the result reflects your own shop and package sizes. Use one currency throughout. Changing the currency changes the display; it does not convert prices.
